Charlie Lindsay

Director of Primary Education

Charlie has a strong commitment to supporting disadvantaged learners and has recently joined DMAT as the Director of Primary Education. He spent the past 15 years at Sandown Primary School in Hastings, where he supported the school community and local alliance in becoming one of the highest‑performing groups of schools in East Sussex. The school has played a pivotal role in strengthening behaviour provision across local schools and in developing countywide processes.

He is an Ambassador for the NCETM Maths Hub and is passionate about promoting a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. He places particular emphasis on the Five Big Ideas—representation and structure, mathematical thinking, variation, fluency, and coherence—which he considers fundamental to achieving high‑quality outcomes in mathematics. He also values outward‑facing professional development and has participated in the Building Bridges Programme, which shares best practice with the Singapore Ministry of Education.

In his role at DMAT, Charlie supports and challenges Primary schools to exemplify outstanding Primary practice, ensuring that all learners thrive while fostering a culture of continuous improvement, reflecting the principle that “Getting Better Never Stops.”

Outside of his professional work, Charlie enjoys swimming and serves as the Masters Captain for Hailsham Swimming Club. He believes that maintaining a healthy work–life balance is essential for positive mental wellbeing.
