This year we have continued to strengthen collaborative partnerships between Durrington High School and primary schools across Durrington and Worthing. Already this term pupils from a number of our local primary schools have visited Durrington High School to participate in high challenge science lessons, which included a heart dissection. We have also hosted a year 5 and 6 maths challenge competition involving eight West Sussex schools and a year 5 world cup tournament.

As part of Durrington Multi Academy Trust (DMAT), The Laurels Primary School is able to access additional resources from Durrington High. This is assisting new headteacher Charlotte Bull to broaden and enrich the curriculum whilst utilising the expertise of subject specialists at Durrington High. Creating dedicated curriculum links between the schools enables teachers from both schools to work together to build and enhance curriculum and enrichment opportunities. In practice, an example of this is the Key Stage 2 maths club, which meets every Tuesday, where pupils undertake mathematical investigations designed to deepen their passion for and understanding of mathematics. From September The Laurels and Durrington High will share excellent PE teachers, thus providing a range of fantastic new opportunities for the pupils at The Laurels. In the area of literacy, Durrington High’s recent Giving Words to The World campaign, in which they collected almost ten thousand books to be donated to local and overseas projects, will see the schools working together on a reading project.

Headteacher of Durrington High and CEO of DMAT Sue Marooney says ‘As a multi academy trust we are committed to excellence in all that we do. The skills and expertise of staff are utilised to ensure that all pupils receive great teaching and have access to a wide programme of enrichment activities. As part of DMAT and under the new leadership of Charlotte Bull, The Laurels is on an exciting journey. We continue to grow links to enrich all areas of our curriculum and teaching across our schools.’

The Laurels has a nursery school, Little Laurels, which is a fantastic way to enhance the learning experience of 3 and 4 year olds to ensure they are fully prepared to start school. Being linked with the primary school offers many opportunities for the nursery children to interact with The Laurels enabling smooth transition to primary school. We are currently accepting applications for September, with a limited number of 3 and 4 year old funded hours available.
